Welcome to the website of The Pony Racing Authority (PRA)

The Pony Racing Authority was founded in 2007 and is the Governing Body for Pony Racing with particular responsibility for ensuring the sport's integrity and safety. The aims of Pony Racing are to;

  • Encourage a wider spectrum of young British enthusiasts to consider developing a career in racing.
  • Encourage 9-15 year olds to sample and enjoy the experience of a raceday.
  • Promote the development of British jockeys to equal the experience and competence gained by their Irish counterparts.
  • Look to develop the interest of young people in urban areas not typically associated with horseracing.

Pony Racing was formally introduced in 2004 following the British Horseracing Authority's 12 month Jump Racing Review undertaken to look at the sustainability and viability of British Jump racing. The Review identified a need to encourage a greater number of young British riding enthusiasts to consider a career as a jockey and to promote the sport to a younger and more diverse audience. The PRA's 2009 Annual Report is available for download from here.
